ARTISTS @ UNIT 5
BALACLAVA KID & DAD Band
Balaclava Kid & Dad were spewed forth from Welsh mountains of serene resonance. Once a 2-piece specialising in musical mind shards then instrumental 3-piece with more of a heavy HUMMMMMM, they are now back as a 2-piece. Angered by sonic censorship in city centres, lack of free practice space and building developers, they have decided to go forth and seek them and they who make these foolish cultural quenchers in order to get amps back to 11.

KATE HODGES Sculpture/ Installation
Kate Hodge’s installations are born from found objects, abandoned/scavenged from everyday and often working in derelict spaces. Her constructions seek to find ‘useful’ and sustainable interventions that invite human interactions in an aesthetic and playful way. She works by responding to her surroundings and bringing attention to the often overlooked or mundane.
In 2008 she produced a site-specific construction made from discarded doors and found wood, Displaced Shelter for UNIT 5 studios, facilitating a space to meet, eat and discuss cultural provision in Norwich. In June 2009 Kate took part in the launch of Live East a new arts project by Other/other/other. She produced a ‘story collection point’, inviting people to talk about their day, plans, ideas and then exchanged this information for a small map asking them to investigate that area of the city and report back.
Kate Hodges graduated from Norwich School of Art & Design and completed an MA in Creative Entrepreneurship at the University of East Anglia in 2008. Recently she successfully participated in a weekend live performance event with sonic artists, was selected to exhibit in AURORA ‘Windows’ exhibition, and is presently planning another performance on top of a local multi storey car park.
Joining Unit 5 at its inception 2 years ago she is now Manager of the studio and is actively involved in keeping the Project Space exciting and busy as well as running and maintaining the resident artists’ studios side of Unit 5.
